Context

The Entrecampos project represents one of the largest urban regeneration initiatives currently underway in Lisbon, transforming the site of the former Feira Popular into a new mixed-use urban district in the heart of the city. The masterplan introduces a group of six buildings organised around public squares, multi-level public spaces and urban routes that connect the development with the existing city fabric and the area’s transport infrastructure.

Designed by Kohn Pedersen Fox (KPF) in collaboration with Saraiva + Associados and recognised with the Best New Mega Development award at the MIPIM Awards 2025, the project draws inspiration from Lisbon’s rich architectural and chromatic character. While the buildings share a common architectural language, variations in scale, materiality and the depth of window openings give each of them a distinct identity within the ensemble. The development is being delivered using BIM (Building Information Modelling) methodology and aims to achieve LEED Gold, WELL Gold and WiredScore certifications, reflecting its commitment to sustainability, wellbeing and connectivity.

Scope

Aluman is responsible for the execution of the architectural envelope of the buildings located on Plot A, where the future headquarters of the Banco de Portugal will be located. The intervention includes the development of a high-performance façade system designed to optimise the building’s energy performance, ensure high levels of indoor comfort and meet the technical requirements of a large-scale corporate complex.

The façade design draws inspiration from the architectural diversity of Lisbon, combining variations in materiality, depth and window geometry to create a dynamic and recognisable composition. The envelope is also integrated into a stepped architectural configuration that allows many of the office floors to have direct access to terraces and outdoor spaces, strengthening the relationship between the interior, the city and the public realm.

Challenge

The main challenge of the project lies in developing an envelope capable of responding to the complexity of a large contemporary urban development, where several buildings share a common architectural language while maintaining their own identity. The façade must balance urban coherence, architectural quality and high technical performance within a context of strong institutional visibility.

This is further reinforced by the need to integrate advanced construction solutions while meeting the demanding criteria associated with international sustainability and wellbeing certifications such as LEED Gold and WELL Gold. The envelope therefore plays a key role in the building’s energy performance, user comfort and the architectural expression of the new Entrecampos district.
