Isla Blanca
Context
Luxury shopping complex in the centre of the sports marina of Ibiza, opposite the old quarter. The aim behind this complex, with its upmarket stores and apartments, is to create a new concept in luxury. Wide open spaces for walking contained under an innovative façade that imitates a straw hat.
Scope
The first challenge was to build the complex moulds for the pieces that formed the overhangs, each of which measured 3 x 2 metres and weighed half a ton. The material used was UHPC (Ultra-High Performance Concrete) a high performance and long-lasting material, but one that is very light and sleek in appearance, which enabled the hollow shapes of the large wing that runs down the building to be reproduced.
Careful planning was required for the transport and assembly of these large, highly-sensitive elements. Although the overhangs are the most representative part of the Isla Blanca complex, Aluman also took care of the rest of the façade project.
The exterior face is a curved curtain wall made by Aluman, with profiling covered with stainless steel polished to mirrorlike quality and highly transparent curved safety glazing with minimum distortion.
Challenge
The lacy overhangs of Isla Blanca, 4,000 m² of overhangs, are the most unique and characteristic part of the project, and the main technical challenge. Delicate pieces of UHPC of 6 m² surface area and 500 kg each one.
