Context

The Naval Museum in Madrid, located within the Spanish Navy Headquarters along the Paseo del Arte, is undergoing a comprehensive energy refurbishment programme that includes the renewal of its façade.
The building was designed by Rafael de La-Hoz Arderius, in collaboration with Alberto López de Asiain Selva and Alberto López de Asiain Martín, and stands as a landmark of 1970s institutional architecture. Its original stick curtain wall forms an essential part of its visual and architectural identity.
The current intervention involves its refurbishment while preserving its distinctive appearance, as part of a wider strategy aimed at optimising the overall energy performance of the building.

Scope

Aluman’s Living Area division is carrying out the full refurbishment of the existing stick curtain wall, upgrading the building envelope to enhance its thermal and technical performance.
The works involve the controlled dismantling of the historic façade and the installation of a new envelope onto a renewed steel structure, integrating contemporary solutions that improve energy efficiency without altering the building’s original aesthetic configuration.

Challenge

The main challenge lies in intervening on a 1970s curtain wall within a highly sensitive heritage setting, balancing visual preservation with technological upgrading.
The new envelope significantly enhances insulation and overall energy performance while maintaining the formal identity of the original design. All of this takes place within the unique institutional setting of the Spanish Navy Headquarters, where technical precision, detailed planning and industrial capability are essential to preserve the building’s heritage value while adapting it to current efficiency standards.
