Context

Located in Ríos Rosas street in Madrid, this building was the headquarters of Telefónica until 2005. The complete renovation process consisted of adapting the building to the demands of an urban regeneration program with minimal environmental impact. This space is now home to more than 2,500 employees of the WPP business group.

The campus, remodelled by b720 Fermín Vázquez Arquitectos and BDG architecture + design, is distributed over six floors with a total surface area of 35,000 m². The space has been totally renovated and offers an integrated, connected and collaborative work place for the agencies of WPP in Madrid. It also acts as a creative hub for the city, providing a social and functional space for industry as a whole and for the employees of WPP.

Seen from the outside, the most visible change is the new façade. The northern and southern side of 140 metres were modified with laminated glazing and wooden frames on the north side and brise soleil aluminium on the south façade. The main north face, of 133 metres, was replaced with a new curtain wall made up of laminated wood and aluminium, while the south façade was renovated with a made to measure aluminium curtain wall and new horizontal aluminium slats that act as solar protection.

Challenge

The curtain wall on the north façade integrates laminated wood with large glazed modules (5 x 2 m), covering a height of 5 m between floors.
